Kenya's International Goalkeeper; Ruto, Retires from Active Football at age 32

Former Kenyan international goalkeeper Joseph Ruto has retired from active football at the age of 32.

The goalkeeper, who has featured for the 2008 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Mathare United in the last six months, has confirmed that a number of challenges facing him at the moment have left him with no option but to call time on his career.

He is, however, not entirely leaving football, as with KNVB training as a goalkeeping coach, he said he is eyeing a keeper coaching role at a local or foreign club.

“I have decided to retire from active football due to many challenges that I am faced with at the moment,” said Ruto.

“I want to do something else, but I am not entirely turning my back on football. I am a trained goalkeeping coach and as such I am eyeing such a role either locally or outside Kenya.

“I have had my highs and lows in my career and at this age I feel it is high time I stepped out to give others a chance. This is not an easy decision for me and I have talked to many people before reaching it.”

Ruto was a league and Cecafa Club Cup champion with Tusker in 2007. In his career, he featured for City Stars, Mathare United, Thika United, Mahakama and Azam FC.
