A brace from Dennis Ombachi guided Kenya
to a 17-14 win over the USA in their opening Pool B fixture at the Hong
Kong Sevens on Friday.Captain Andrew Amonde drew first blood
for Kenya, chipping and gathering his own kick to barge over the line
with Biko Adema converting for a 7-0 lead.
Former 100m sprinter Carlton Isles
reacted quickest to a Shalom Suniula punt downfield, scoring under the
posts with Suniula converting for a 7-7 score.
Ombachi would score the first of his tries giving Kenya a 12-7 lead going into half time.
Kenya would go ten points clear upon
resumption when Ombachi scored again but a Matt Hawkins try and Folau
Niua conversion saw the USA trail by just three points, 17-14 the
figures on the score board. The score would remain this way, even as
Kenya weathered a late storm when Adema failed to find touch, the USA
regaining possession. Kenya would hold out for the 17-14 result.
Up next for Kenya is a match against New Zealand at 8.24am.
